Always remember the rules of firearm safety… This guy didn’t

Much to our chagrin, negligent discharges are a somewhat regular occurrence – there are plenty of videos on YouTube that can attest to that. More often than not it’s someone who is new and not familiar with the safe handling of firearms, or someone who simply forgot the firearm was still loaded.

Less common, however, are they the result of a firearms instructor being a complete moron while teaching others… which is the case in a popular video making the rounds on the Internet this week.

The video depicts a range safety officer (how ironic…) at an indoor range in Las Vegas giving instruction on how to shoot a .44 Magnum revolver. During his instruction he was demonstrating how to shoot the revolver in single action and, with the barrel pointed towards the ceiling, he gives ‘er a squeeze.

What made it worse, however, was his complete failure to own up to his mistake. When asked if he meant to do that, he quickly replied with “Yes I did” – as he turns beet red and retreats to the shooting stall in obvious embarrassment. I seriously hope this guy lost his job after that stunt.

Negligent discharges are always avoidable, so don’t be like this guy. Always remember ACTS and PROVE:

Assume all firearms are loaded until you PROVE otherwise

Control the muzzle at all times

Trigger finger must be kept off the trigger and out of the trigger guard until you are ready to shoot

Point the firearm in a safe direction

Remove all cartridges

Observe the chamber

Verify the feeding path

Examine the bore

And, for the love of all things good in this world, unload the damn thing before you teach someone how to use it!
